Poor Old Lu at The Showbox: a reunion that still sways

Seattle’s alternative veterans take the legendary room, play the catalogue without sanding the rust off, and leave the door open for a new record.

The record, not the poster

Reunion nights are a high wire. The room remembers a younger band. Voices drop. Chemistry is not the van-years version. Poor Old Lu still walked into Seattle’s Showbox in fall 2025 and made a live document worth keeping. At The Showbox is fifteen tracks, nearly fifty-nine minutes, out September 1, 2026. Self-released. No costume. A hometown room that has held Armstrong, Sinatra, and the grunge years — the right box for this psychedelic, soulful alternative faith-rock.

What the cut does

They open in the catalogue’s strongest pocket. “Rail,” from A Picture Of The Eighth Wonder, still builds that long, trippy guitar weather before the lyric names Judas and the cold hands. “For The Love Of My Country” and “All Pretty For The TV” still write social critique that Christian radio mostly will not touch — wealth, performance, the dirty word of saying a thing is meaningless. The observations have not expired. They would fit a feed in 2026 as easily as a club in the nineties.

Mixed genre, same confession

This set is a map, not a museum: “Where Were All Of You,” “The Weeds That Grow Around My Feet,” “Bliss Is,” “Revolve,” “Receive.” The closer stretch — the rainy-city irony of “Hello Sunny Weather” into the slightly goofy “Cannon-Fire Orange” — is the right kind of uncool. Poor Old Lu wrote pointed songs from a faith floor. New bands in this lane should still steal the homework.

Play it

If you never had the records, start here. If you did, this is the lived-in version: rust allowed, keys maybe dropped, conviction not dropped. The performance will make old listeners ask for a new studio album. That ask is the point of a reunion that works.

Christian music journalism. Mixed genres. Gospel in every story.
